“I will put a new Spirit in you.”

Today’s readings bring us face to face with one powerful truth: God is not content to leave us in our graves. Through the prophet Ezekiel, God promises, “I will open your graves… I will put my Spirit in you that you may live.” This is not just a future promise; it is a present reality fulfilled in our encounter with Jesus Christ.

In the Gospel, we see Jesus standing before the tomb of Lazarus. He does something remarkable, He weeps. Before He raises Lazarus, He shares in the pain of Martha and Mary. This tells us that God is not distant from our suffering. He enters into it. But He does not stop there. Jesus then cries out, “Lazarus, come out!”—and death gives way to life.

What is happening here is more than a miracle; it is a revelation of the Holy Spirit at work. As St. Paul tells us in Romans, the Spirit of the One who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in us. The same Spirit that brought Lazarus out of the tomb is the Spirit given to us, the Spirit that restores, renews, and gives life.

This means that our “tombs” today are not only physical death. They are the places where life seems absent: sin, fear, hopelessness, broken relationships, emotional wounds. Like Lazarus, we can be bound—wrapped in what holds us back. Yet Jesus still calls us by name, and the Holy Spirit gives us the power to rise.

But notice something important: Jesus tells the people, “Untie him and let him go.” The work of new life is not only God’s action, it also involves the community. The Spirit works through others to help free us, to support us, to walk with us.

The theme of today can be summarized simply: God’s Spirit brings life where there is death. He opens what is closed, restores what is lost, and calls us out of darkness into life.

As we approach Easter, we are invited to ask: What is my tomb? Where do I need the Spirit of God to breathe new life into me? And am I willing to hear the voice of Christ calling me out?
