"And whoever gives only a cup of cold water to one of these little ones to drink because he is a disciple... he will surely not lose his reward." (Matthew 10:42)

Today's readings remind us that authentic discipleship is measured not merely by religious observances but by a transformed heart that is expressed in love, justice, and generous service. Through the prophet Isaiah, God rebukes His people for offering sacrifices while neglecting righteousness. Their worship had become empty because it was disconnected from the way they treated others. The Lord does not delight in rituals that are not accompanied by repentance, compassion, and justice. He calls His people to "cease doing evil, learn to do good, make justice your aim, redress the wronged, hear the orphan's plea, defend the widow." In the Gospel, Jesus raises the standard of discipleship. Following Him demands total commitment. Sometimes fidelity to Christ may bring misunderstanding, opposition, or even division within families. Jesus assures us that every sacrifice made for His sake is never forgotten. Even the smallest act of charity, such as offering a cup of cold water to one of His disciples, carries eternal value in the eyes of God. Nothing done out of genuine love for Christ is insignificant. The Memorial of Saint Henry beautifully illustrates this teaching. Though he was a powerful emperor, Saint Henry understood that greatness is found in humble service. He used his authority not for personal glory but to promote justice, support the Church, care for the poor, and foster peace. His life teaches us that holiness is possible in every vocation when power, influence, and possessions are placed at the service of God and His people. Saint Henry's generosity was not simply philanthropy; it flowed from a heart completely surrendered to Christ. Our world often celebrates spectacular achievements, but Jesus celebrates quiet faithfulness. A kind word, a helping hand, a visit to the lonely, a meal shared with the hungry, a prayer for someone in distress, or a simple cup of cold water offered with love can become an offering that reaches heaven. God sees what the world overlooks, and He promises that no act of love performed for His sake will ever lose its reward. Today, let us examine our hearts. Is our worship reflected in our daily conduct? Do our prayers lead us to greater charity? Are we willing to carry the cross of faithful discipleship even when it is costly? May we imitate Saint Henry by allowing our faith to shape not only our words but also our actions, so that our lives become a living sacrifice pleasing to God.
