Deuteronomy 4:1, 5-9/Psalm 147/Matthew 5:17-19
Wednesday of the Third Week of Lent
In the readings of today’s Mass, we are reminded that God’s commandments are not merely rules imposed on us; they are a gift that shapes our identity as God’s people and leads us toward our heavenly destiny. The commandments reveal who we are before God and how we are called to live in relationship with Him and with one another. In the first reading from Deuteronomy, Moses urges the people of Israel to listen carefully to the statutes and decrees of the Lord. He tells them that by observing these commandments they will show wisdom and understanding before the nations. In other words, their obedience to God’s law will reveal their identity as a people who belong to God. The commandments are not given to restrict life but to protect and guide it. Moses even reminds them to pass these teachings on to their children and grandchildren, because their faith and identity depend on remembering what God has done and living according to His word. In the Gospel, Jesus deepens this understanding. He makes it clear that He did not come to abolish the law but to fulfill it. Jesus shows us that the commandments reach their fullest meaning in Him. He calls His disciples not only to obey the commandments but also to teach them by their lives. According to Jesus, those who practice and teach the commandments will be called great in the Kingdom of heaven. This reveals an important truth: our heavenly identity is connected to how we live God’s word here on earth. Obedience to God’s commandments is not simply about following rules; it is about living as citizens of the Kingdom of heaven or living as resurrected people. When we forgive, love, speak the truth, and act with justice and compassion, we reflect the life of heaven even now. During this Lenten season, the readings invite us to examine our relationship with God’s commandments. Do we see them as burdens, or as a path that leads us closer to God? When we embrace God’s word and live it faithfully, we discover who we truly are: children of God called to holiness and destined for the Kingdom of heaven. May we not only hear God’s commandments but also live them, so that through our lives others may see the wisdom of God and be drawn closer to Him.
