“The Word of God has made me an object of ridicule.”

Today, the prophet Jeremiah gives us a powerful picture of what it means to remain faithful to God in difficult times. Jeremiah has proclaimed God's message, but instead of receiving appreciation, he experiences ridicule, rejection and opposition. He becomes so discouraged that he wants to stop speaking in God's name. But he discovers that God's Word is like “fire burning in my heart.” He cannot keep it inside. Jeremiah's experience speaks strongly to our own time. We live in a world filled with many voices and influences that often compete with the Gospel. Speaking the truth, forgiving others, remaining faithful, serving others and living according to Christian values may not always be popular or easy. Sometimes we may feel discouraged when our faith is misunderstood or when our service is not appreciated. St. Paul tells us, “Do not conform yourselves to this age but be transformed by the renewal of your mind.” We are called not simply to follow whatever the world considers acceptable, but to ask: “What does God want from me?” Christian discipleship requires us to allow God to transform our hearts, our attitudes and our choices. In the Gospel, Jesus makes this call even clearer: “Whoever wishes to come after me must deny himself, take up his cross, and follow me.” Peter wanted Jesus without suffering and glory without the Cross. Jesus reminds him that genuine discipleship requires sacrifice. We cannot have resurrection without the Cross, nor authentic Christian service without commitment and self-giving. Through our many ministries, we become instruments of God's love. Some ministries are visible, while others happen quietly behind the scenes, but every act of faithful service matters to God. Let us not be spectators in the Church, but active disciples. Let us offer our time, talents and gifts generously, not for recognition or applause, but because we love Christ and His Church. When we become tired or discouraged, let us remember Jeremiah: God's Word is a fire that cannot be contained. Let us remember Paul: “Do not conform yourselves to this age.” And let us remember Jesus: “Take up your cross and follow me.” May God make a people that hears His Word, lives His Word and shares His Word through loving service. And may each of us have the courage to say: “Lord, here I am. You have given me gifts. Show me where I can serve.”
