Through the Light of the Holy Spirit We Know the Mind of God

Today, St. Paul reminds us of a profound truth: “No one knows what pertains to God except the Spirit of God.” If we truly want to understand God, His commandments, His will, and the mysteries of our faith, we need the light of the Holy Spirit. There are many things in life that human wisdom alone cannot fully understand. The world may tell us that success means wealth, power, recognition, and comfort. But the Spirit teaches us that true greatness is found in humility, love, service, forgiveness, and holiness. Without the Holy Spirit, we can know the words of God but fail to understand their meaning for our lives. The Holy Spirit helps us move beyond merely following rules to understanding the heart behind God’s commandments. God’s precepts are not burdens meant to restrict our freedom; they are invitations to live according to His wisdom and love. The Spirit gives us the grace to see why God asks us to forgive, to love our enemies, to remain faithful, to protect life, and to serve others. In today’s Gospel, Jesus teaches with authority and commands an unclean spirit to leave a man. The people are amazed because His word possesses power. This reminds us that there are voices competing for our hearts: the voice of God and the voices of the world, fear, temptation, selfishness, and confusion. We need the Holy Spirit to discern which voice we should follow. Discernment is more than asking, “What do I want?” It is asking, “Lord, what do You want? Where is Your Spirit leading me?” The Holy Spirit gives us wisdom to recognize what is truly from God and courage to reject what leads us away from Him. St. Paul gives us the beautiful conclusion: “We have the mind of Christ.” Through the Holy Spirit, we are invited to think as Christ thinks, love as Christ loves, and see people and situations through the eyes of Christ. Therefore, let us not make important decisions guided only by emotions, opinions, or worldly wisdom. Let us pray: “Come, Holy Spirit. Enlighten my mind, purify my heart, guide my decisions, and help me understand the mind of God.” When the Holy Spirit becomes our guide, God’s commandments become paths of life, His Word becomes light, and our hearts become more capable of recognizing His will.
