Jeremiah 7:23-28/Psalm 95/Luke 11:14-23
Thursday of the Third Week of Lent
Today’s readings invite us to reflect on a serious spiritual problem: the danger of becoming “stiff-necked” before God. In the first reading, the prophet Jeremiah speaks about people who refused to listen to God. Even though God sent many prophets to guide them, they hardened their hearts and followed their own ways. Because they would not listen, faithfulness slowly disappeared from their lives. A “stiff-necked” person is someone who refuses to turn toward God, someone who knows the truth but chooses not to listen. The Psalm gives us the opposite attitude. It says, “If today you hear his voice, harden not your hearts.” God is always speaking to us, guiding us, correcting us, and inviting us back to Him. The real question is whether we are willing to listen with humble hearts. In the Gospel, Jesus drives out a demon and restores a man who could not speak. Instead of rejoicing at this miracle, some people accuse Jesus of using evil power. Their hearts are so hardened that they cannot recognize the work of God right in front of them. That is what spiritual stubbornness can do; it blinds us to God’s presence. Jesus then makes a very clear statement: “Whoever is not with me is against me, and whoever does not gather with me scatters.” In other words, there is no neutral ground in our relationship with Christ. We either walk with Him, or we move away from Him. We either help gather people into God’s love through our actions, or we scatter them through our attitudes and behavior. This message challenges us during Lent. Sometimes we can be “stiff-neck Christians.” We may come to church, pray, and call ourselves believers, but still resist God’s voice in our daily lives. We hold on to pride, refuse correction, or ignore the ways God is calling us to change. Lent is a time to soften our hearts. Instead of resisting God, we are invited to listen again, to turn back to Him, and to walk with Christ more faithfully. When we truly follow Jesus, with humility, love, and obedience, we help gather others into the Kingdom of God. So today let us ask for the grace not to be stiff-necked believers, but humble disciples who listen to God’s voice and stand firmly with Christ.
