Servants of Christ and Stewards of the Mysteries of God

St. Paul gives us a beautiful description of what it means to belong to Christ: “Thus should one regard us: as servants of Christ and stewards of the mysteries of God.” A servant does not live for himself, and a steward does not own what has been entrusted to him. He receives something from the master and is expected to care for it faithfully.

This is true of every Christian. Our faith, our gifts, our families, our time, our possessions, and especially the mysteries of God have been entrusted to us. We are not owners but stewards. The question is not simply, “What have I received?” but, “What have I done with what God has entrusted to me?”

Paul also reminds us not to become overly concerned with human judgment: “The one who judges me is the Lord.” We can easily become prisoners of people's opinions, seeking praise when people approve of us and becoming discouraged when they criticize us. But our ultimate accountability is before God. What matters most is not how impressive we appear before others, but whether our hearts are faithful before the Lord.

The Gospel takes us deeper. Jesus speaks about new wine and fresh wineskins. Christ has come to make all things new. The Christian life cannot simply be about preserving old habits while refusing the transformation Christ desires. Sometimes God wants to pour new grace into our lives, but we remain attached to our old ways, old resentments, old fears, old prejudices, old sins, and old ways of thinking.

To be a good steward means being willing to be renewed. We must allow Christ to transform our hearts so that the new wine of His grace will not be wasted.
May we never live merely for human approval. May we faithfully serve Christ, responsibly care for His gifts, and remain open to His transforming grace. And when the Lord comes, may He find us trustworthy servants whose hearts belong completely to Him.
