“To the other towns also I must proclaim the good news of the Kingdom of God, because for this purpose I have been sent.”

Jesus is completely conscious of His mission. After healing Simon’s mother-in-law and many others who were sick and oppressed, the people wanted Him to remain with them. Jesus did not allow the demands or admiration of the crowd to distract Him from His purpose. He said, “To the other towns also I must proclaim the good news of the Kingdom of God, because for this purpose I have been sent.”
Jesus teaches us that mission must always be greater than personal comfort, popularity, or attachment. He came not simply to heal the people of one town, but to bring the Good News to all. His compassion moved Him outward. Wherever there were people in need of God’s mercy, truth, healing, and salvation, Jesus was willing to go.
This message connects beautifully with St. Paul’s teaching in the first reading. The Corinthians were divided because some identified themselves with Paul and others with Apollos. Paul reminds them that ministers are only co-workers with God: “I planted, Apollos watered, but God caused the growth.” The Church does not belong to a priest, a pastor, a ministry, a group, or an individual. The Church belongs to Christ. We are simply instruments in His hands.
This is an important reminder for every Christian. Sometimes we can become attached to our own achievements, ministries, positions, or recognition. We may begin to ask, “Who did it?” rather than “Did it bring people closer to Christ?” But Paul reminds us that the real growth comes from God. Our responsibility is to plant and water faithfully; God gives the increase.
Jesus therefore challenges us to ask: What is the purpose for which God has sent me? We are not called merely to live for ourselves. Every Christian is sent, to our families, workplaces, communities, parishes, and wherever God places us. Some are called to preach, some to teach, some to serve the poor, some to encourage the discouraged, and others simply to witness to Christ through a life of love and integrity.
Jesus did not remain where He was comfortable. He moved on because there were other towns waiting to hear the Good News. May we never become so comfortable in our faith that we forget those who still need to encounter Christ.
